Achilles injury associated with increased knee loading forces

This article from Lower Extremity Review discusses the relationship between loading forces in the knee and injury risk at the ankle. If muscle strength and activation are not competent in one joint you may very well compensate for that in another region. When determining return-to-play criteria we should just think of rehabbing the site of injury. The same can be said for assessing injury risk. An athlete's idea of "functional" may be one-dimensional. Just because they have no ankle or knee pain doesn't mean they aren't at risk for future injury if they are significantly weaker in their single-leg hopping skills on one leg compared to the other. This article reaffirms the kinetic chain and that we should not merely look to the site of pain, when assessing and treating.  Athletes, do you have a recurring ankle problem? Are your single leg hop skills relatively equal on both sides? Stop doing aimless band exercises and seek out someone who can help you get to the root of the problem and improve holistically.
