What a college coach is REALLY looking for in a recruit

With the competitiveness of college and high school sports increasing rapidly at every level the topic of recruitment to college programs is increasingly relevant. As young athletes and their parents feel the pressure of having to achieve certain times and stats to be "looked at" it is so easy to lose perspective of the big picture. Mostly, coaches are humans. They don't want to deal with self-absorbed jerks who don't understand the value of having teammates and having a coach in the first place. You may be fast (etc.) but if you are fast and you are a jerk they will simply say "next, please." There is no shortage of talent in this country. What we are experiencing a shortage of is young student-athletes who see their sport as a holistic endeavor and ultimately a grounds on which to better themselves, receive guidance, develop relationships and open up pathways to good life opportunities post-collegiately. I think this article: "An Open Letter To The Athlete We Must Stop Recruiting" does an excellent job putting this all into perspective. Enjoy. And be nice out there.
